The New Inn was situated
N.E. of and next to St Stephens Church in the High St. It belonged to
the Chamber (Council) and was rebuilt in 1688 at a reputed cost of
£755. It was insured for £1000 in 1729 when it was
leased at a rent of £200 per year.
It later formed part of the premises occupied by Bobbys Ltd (formerly
Greens which was destroyed by enemy action in May 1942).

Installation banquet
was usually held at the Rougemount Hotel in the early 1900s, and
refreshments after labour were generally provided, but not in June,
July and September.
