Meeting Places, Names and Numbers of St John the Baptist Lodge since 1732.

1732 - New Inn, High Street, Exeter - No name - No number

1734 - The Lodge of The New Inn, Exeter - No. 97 (recorded as such in Pine’s engraved list of 1734)

The New Inn was situated N.E. of and next to St Stephens Church in the High St. It belonged to the Chamber (Council) and was rebuilt in 1688 at a reputed cost of £755. It was insured for £1000 in 1729 when it was leased at a rent of £200 per year.

It later formed part of the premises occupied by Bobbys Ltd (formerly Greens which was destroyed by enemy action in May 1942).

1773 - Half Moon Inn, demolished 1912 to widen the entrance to Bedford Circus, which was itself destroyed by enemy action in 1942

1778 - The Phoenix Inn (demolished during the construction of Queen Street - not to be confused with the later Phoenix Inn which stood in GoldSmith Street) - No. 48

In the opinion of the notable Masonic historian Bro. W. J. Hughan had it not been for the Union our number would be 19.

The Installation banquet was usually held at the Rougemount Hotel in the early 1900s, and refreshments after labour were generally provided, but not in June, July and September.

** Gandy St was jointly purchased by Semper Fidelis, St George’s and St John The Baptist in 1876 the first official lodge meeting held there was St John The Baptist on 26th April 1877, following the consecration ceremony held on 23rd April.
