On Saturday 28th
April 2007 St John the Baptist Lodge No. 39 was delighted to receive a
delegation from Lodge Craigends No. 1042 SC. Our Scottish brethren
had come to give an exposition of a Scottish Third Degree ceremony.
News of the impending ceremony had spread far and wide and Lodge 39
was pleased to receive guests from many other Devon Lodges and from
Lodges outside the province.
The afternoon proved to
be highly successful and all who witnessed the Scottish ceremony were
greatly impressed.
Although much of the
ceremony was familiar to us, few were prepared for such a powerful
and dramatic ceremony as well as the physical violence
inflicted on the
candidate! Bro P.E. of St John the Baptist Lodge acted as the
candidate for the ceremony and he has now joined an elite band of
English freemasons who have participated in a Scottish exposition.-
and he has a tie to prove it.
Following the ceremony
the Brethren dined together on “Devon Fare” and the
Lodges
exchanged gifts. The second highlight of the evening was provided by
Bro G.B of Excester Lodge No. 6228 who is the Pipe Major of
the Exeter Pipe Band. As the brethren were finishing their meal the
unmistakable skirl of the pipes could be heard ascending the stairs
to the dining room in Gandy Street. This was a real surprise and Bro
B’s playing was met with rapturous applause from both Scots
and English brethren.
The evening concluded
with much singing and innocent mirth and plans are already in place
for a team from St John the Baptist Lodge to travel north of the
border later this year.
